I am Christopher Jorna, the founder and prime contributor to oikonautics.com.
Oikonautics is about crewing our space ship earth.
I use crewing as a metaphor for our social, political and economic activity as the managerial mammals tending to the earth’s life support systems.
You can read about this at length on the front home page.
If you scent the influence of Buckminster Fuller in concept of crewing space ship earth then we have some overlap in our reading / viewing habits.
The ‘ecos’ of our oikos.
Our oikos is our home meaning the whole spectrum of home from global to local senses.
The ‘ecos’ are as follows:
The phrase ‘ecos’ of our oikos can be distilled as a playful reference to political praxis in terms of 3 P (4 P) triple bottom line theory and practice..
…Seeking Grace and Truth…
Grace is undeserved favour granted without strings attached.
To be graceful is to give freely without expectation of any return.
Even the theologically challenged who insist that there is no ultimate personal Giver (aka God, the CREATOR) recognize the given-ness of the material, energy and cultural legacy that comes to each overlapping generation upon this spheroid space vehicle we call earth.
Because we receive the legacy of this planet and our ancestors independent of our ideas of worthiness it therefore behooves us to respect the reality of that given-ness in our relations with others regardless of our ideas of God’s existence.
Even in the unlikely event that all is after all random it all existed independent of us as individuals and as human beings we inherit what exists from infancy, even before we are able to ‘earn’ our ‘fair share’ of it as responsible adults according to our ‘just deserts’.
Thus, just as an understanding of Grace can be derived even apart from the reality of God’s existence, the justice of sharing resources and natural aesthetics can be reasoned apart from our ideas of merit.
There is a common inheritance justly shared by all humans that points to the righteousness (right relatedness, right relationships) of equitable distribution and global-communal sharing in the expansion of wealth, not from the point of view of envy for those fewer who might ‘earn’ more through their ‘more productive’ activities, but from the given-ness of the cultural, material and energy legacies upon the planet and the dignity of all human beings as persons.
This site seeks universal truth shared by all humanity.
The site seeks to go beyond your truth and my truth according to our contextual lives, our will to power, our self or other assigned identities, and our political word games to find what is true regardless of our condition, our context, our will, our experiences, and our socio-political-economic power plays. Further Oikonautics seeks to apply truth to social, political and economic practice.
This is a slippery quest and one with a potential for hubris, hegemonic other bashing, ignorance disguised as knowledge, self deception, mass self delusion, utopia building, and things like the deformation in 16th century Munster, Jones Town, Heaven’s Gate, or the Order of the Solar Temple.
One always needs to be seeking truth because we cannot fully comprehend it or possess it.
If we believe we have the truth in ourselves we become dangerous to our neighbours.
But that danger is not an excuse to avoid seeking truth because if we do not seek truth then some of our neighbours will take advantage of our passiveness in some sort of ugly dehumanizing power play.
And or we will descend into nihilism and nihilism sucks as there is no reason beyond what we can force upon others.
Even if we avoid nihilism we may even become those ‘evil’ neighbours in our quest to remain blissfully truthless.
Warning Jesus talk below. For more on the attitude with which Jesus is proclaimed as Truth on this website please click HERE.
I proclaim truth as the person of Jesus Christ, not because I found Him, but because He seeks us and reveals Himself to those who hunger and long for the truth.
Because the Truth is ultimately a person, Jesus, the truth cannot be captured with the tools of narrative or proposition (truth can be explored in this way but never captured) but must be experienced relationally in community with other human beings and in harmony with the Creator’s purpose for the earth.
Thus, despite the fact that we do find Truth in Jesus we need to continue seeking Jesus because when we stop seeking the Truth we cease to relate to Him. For all that we can grow or shrink in understanding we ultimately do not comprehend (grasp) the truth, the truth grasps us relationally.
And yes, there is a bit of dogma to this proclamation. Maybe that is bad karma but I’m OK with it, and I think Jesus is as well. ; P
Crewing Our Planetary Home…
By crewing our planetary home I mean the practice and theory of living life together on this planet in ways that respect the realities that, while we may realize efficiencies, reductions and reuses through technology, we ourselves are unable to expand the existing material and energy elements of our planet.
There is only one earth, if we act to crash the systems that support our life we are like insane astronauts courting suicide through foolish waste. Who smokes in a space ship?
Our Creator has the power to create matter and energy out of nothing for the Creator’s own purposes.
It follows that as creatures we cannot presume upon that power and we do not have that power at our own disposal for our own purposes.
However, as creatures we may take the Creator at the Creator’s promises and trust in the Creator with childlike (not childish) faith.
Through our imagination applied to technical and political practice we can expand the utility of what is provided to us, but we cannot add matter or energy to this earth beyond what comes to us from the sun, space dust & meteors.
In that sense earth is like a space ship, provided with every scrap of material available to the crew already in transit and no more than that.
